SMART Goal Setting For 2009

Posted by User ImageTom | December 16, 2008 | Posted in: Blog Goals | Comments (26)

smart goals

As we get set to welcome in 2009, we also must stop and take note of what we are looking to achieve in this coming year. Setting goals is one of the biggest keys to succeeding in any area of life and blogging is no exception.

“He who fails to plan, plans to fail!”

This is one quote that has stuck with me ever since I heard it, and it continually reminds me to stop and take check that I am constantly updating my goals.

There are two type of goals you can set:

  • SMART goals
  • Dumb goals

Here is an example of some dumb goals!

  1. I will make more money than last year from my blog
  2. I will regularly post on my blog
  3. I will make a million dollars online next year
  4. I want to grow the traffic to my blog
  5. I will spend time working on the SEO of my blog

Why are these goals dumb?

Before I can show you why these goals are dumb (if you haven’t worked it out already), I have to show you exactly what makes up a smart goal. As you may have guessed SMART is an acronym that shows you the integral parts of a smart goal.

SMART Goals

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Attainable

R - Relevan

T - Time Bound

Lets take a look at each of these essential building blocks individually:

  1. Specific

To make a goal specific we have to look at the 5 ‘W’s

    Why?

    What?

    Where?

    When?

    Why?

There is more chance of you being motivated by a goal that is specific as it gives you steps to achieve them not just a pie in the sky statement.

Lets look at the first of our dumb goals:

I will make more money than last year from my blog

A SMART version of this goal would be:

I will make an extra $100 a month from my blog through direct sales, affiliate promotion and Google Adsense

Now you have set a specific amount you will make which allows you to track your progress as well as the way you aim to achieve it.

  2. Measurable

You have to make sure that you can measure your goals to make sure that you have reached them, or just to keep tabs on how you are traveling with them.

If you cannot measure your goal, you cannot manage your goal

To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as……How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

  3. Attainable

The reason I threw in the following dumb goal:

I will make a million dollars online next year

Is because I see a lot of new bloggers make statements like this - maybe not as big, but that is just it. They just pluck a number out of the air that they would like to make but we all know there is no chance that they will make it. Not because they can’t, but because of they way they have set their goal.

If you can explain how you will make the million dollars they maybe I will give you the benefit of the doubt. If you can make it specific and measurable, then maybeI will think you have a small chance of making it. Just don’t set goals that just pluck a figure out of the air just for the sake of having a goal.

  4. Relevant

When you are looking at planning your long and short term goals is there a link between the two? Do your goals parallel each other? Make sure each goal is consistent with other goals you have established and fits with your immediate and long-term range plans.

  5. Time Bound

It is no use having a specific and attainable goals if you do not give yourself a time frame to complete them within.

I will spend time working on the SEO of my blog

Looking at this goal it doesn’t really motivate you at all. I would change it to something similar to this:

I will write 1 keyword targeted articles and comment at least 2 new blogs each day for the next 30 days

This type of goal is so much easier to attain because each day you can go ‘Ok, I need to write one article and comment at least 2 new blogs each day’ and it gives you something to do to complete your goal. Instead of just an airy statement about spending time on working on your SEO.

So when you start looking at setting goals for 2008, make the SMART choice and set SMART goals!

Affiliate Program Review: T3Leads.com

Posted by User ImageTom | December 15, 2008 | Posted in: Reviews | Comments (11)

It seems that new affiliate programs are popping up all the time, but something I’ve found is not a lot of them seem to be able to keep the momentum that they start with. But in saying that, today I am going to take a closer look at one affiliate company that seems to be building a lot of momentum in the affiliate circle to see what it is doing to make sure it lasts.

Who Is T3Leads.com?

t3leads

T3Leads.com is a specialised affiliate company that focus’ on lead generation of CPA (cost per action) affiliate offers in the finance industry.

Their offers are in niches including:

  • Debt Settlement
  • Credit Cards
  • Pay Day Loans
  • Insurance
  • Tax Debts
  • Mortgage Loans
  • Forclosures
  • Auto Loans
  • Home Improvements

While some may say that T3Leads is limiting themselves by focusing on just one niche, I see it as a smart move as they set themselves apart and now have the opportunity to be the leader in the Finance affiliate niche - and what I have found is that it is easier to make a name for yourself by having a defined focus instead of targetting everyone.

Let’s Take A Look Inside?

I created an account with T3Leads to have an inside look at what they have on offer, and once I logged on, the first thing I noticed was that those who do well and are committed to this program are rewarded. I mean, check out this screen shot I took of something I noticed on the home page of my account.

t3leads

I’d love to win a Sony Vaio :D

The Offers

Next let’s take a look at the most important part of a good affiliate program - the products on offer.

Here is a look at the campaign listings.

t2leads campaigns

As you can see each campaign gives you the following important information:

  • A Preview of the landing page
It is no use promoting a campaign - no matter how good the end product is, if the landing page doesn’t convert. Here is a sample of a few of the landing pages. Payday Loans Landing Page. Credit Repair Landing Page.
  • Keywords
Once you click the notepad icon, a new window opens with a list of keywords for you to target with your PPC campaign. I am sure this may be helpful for new affiliate marketers, but I am sure the more experienced PPC marketer will probably create his own unique list.
  • Your Affiliate Link
You won’t get very far without this! Obviously this is the link you need to use in your campaigns to make sure that you get paid for each lead you send.

But How Much Do I Get Paid?

As you may have noticed from the above screenshot, their doesn’t seem to be any mention of how much you get paid for each lead you send. It took me a while to find out why they don’t say anything -and how we find out, but it seems that the reason is because they work on a dynamic pricing structure that rewards quality leads over quantity.

Here is what T3Leads say about their pricing:

Price of every separate leads depends on several factors. The main factor affecting leads prices is quality of your traffic - the customers should meet the criterias of lenders. Furthermore, your website should stay on higher positions in search engine results page to overtake your rivals in the fight for potential customers. The visitor can fill in application forms on several different feeds. If your feed is the first one, where the visitor has filled in a form, the price of your lead will be near maximal high.”

They also have a page dedicated to their pricing structure, with not only price guidelines but also with conversion rates. You can vieew their Leads Pricing Page Here.

Banners

If you are looking at using your traffic from your blog or website instead of PPC, then you will love the selection of banners that T3Leads have made available for you to use. They are all animated gif banners and I personally think they may be a little bit too animated but I’ll let you make your own decision:

Payment

t3leads payments

As you can see, you have quite a range of payment methods to receive your affiliate money. I am guessing Paypal and Company Checks are the most popular options.

Conclusion

I personally will be using T3Leads for one of my niche blogs that focus’ on finance as I have found a campaign that would fit perfectly. I think that T3Leads would be a great way to monetize any blog of website that has visitors with some form of financial need.

PPC is not one of my strong points and I have never really tried it, but I am sure that you could definately make some money with T3Leads if you plan your campaigns!

4 Ways To Develop Your Unique Blogging Style

Posted by User ImageTom | December 8, 2008 | Posted in: Blogging | Comments (31)

Developing your blogging style

I’ve Taken A Few Detours

I remember growing up and all through high school, not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. There were so many choices, and so many possibilities. One week I was set on becoming a scientist, the next I was sure the career path I would follow would be that of an optometrist - then it change to business.

When I finished high school I enrolled in a Bachelor of Biomedical Science - which I did one year of before decided that science wasn’t for me. The next year I completed the first year of a Bachelor of Business, but got frustrated with the fact that all they taught me to do was work for someone else - when I wanted to learn how to start my own business.

After that I started a Diploma of Financial Services with the intent of getting into stock broking, but before I could finish that course I was offered a Traineeship in Real Estate Sales - which I took. At the end of the traineeship I decided that sales wasn’t for me and started working for my dad, building houses - which is what I have been doing for the last 12 months.

Why Am I telling You This?

Because not everyone is able to slip straight into their lifelong career right from high school, sometimes we take detours and other times we have things to learn before we are ready.

It takes a while for us to find out who we are, what we are meant to do and how we are meant to go about doing it. The funny thing is that we never usually end up where we think we will!

I remember when I was growing up, EVERYONE I knew thought I was going to be a scientist, doctor or in some other medical related field. I was smart, I read nonstop, I was interested in it and studied it in my personal time - but as I got older I started to grow and develop. To search and to learn. And I ended up in a totally different (not right or wrong - just different) spot than myself and everyone watching my life had expected.

It Is The Same With Our Blogs

When ever I start a blog, I have it all planned out. The theme, the content, the style. I have a mental picture of how I expect it to look in 6-12 months time. But just like with our lives - it never turns out like we expect!

Looking back at the last 6 months of this blog, I have seen it go through stages of growth as well as times of staleness. I have watched myself change the way I blog and tweak the way I convey my thoughts.

I have tried:

  • List Posts
  • Tutorials
  • Motivational Posts
  • Competitions
  • Video Blogging

And I am sure some of you would by now be thinking ‘ just go ahead and choose your blogging style already.’

But what I am doing now is exactly what I did as I was growing up - I am finding myself and my blogging style. I am seeing what works and what doesn’t in the purpose of finding myself in the midst of millions of other bloggers, and in the process - setting myself apart.

In the last 6 months I have noticed a few things that I have learnt about finding your own unique blogging style that I hope will help you in the pursuit of finding yours. Read more

RIP: Blogger Film Festival

Posted by User ImageTom | December 7, 2008 | Posted in: Blog Film Festival | Comments (20)

rip blogger film festivalWell it’s monday morning and the first week of the blogging film festival is over, and to be honest:

It was a failure!

I hate admitting that I was wrong, but obviously it seems that bloggers are not that interested in video blogging and it is no use beating a dead horse.

I’m not sure if Suzanne is still submitting an entry, so I’ll let her reply to this thread and see. But if she doesn’t then Ben will take all the prizes for this week.

What About The Rest Of The Film Festival

I am going to cancel it. I tried something new, some thing different - and it didn’t work. That means that it is time to move onto something that does. A post is coming that will talk about why I decided on the film festival and where I am going from here.

And The Rest Of The Prizes?

All the generous prize donaters will be contacted and I will let them know that the Film Festival is now cancelled. However, I will discuss with them the possiblities of using their donated products in another way for your to benefit from them.

And John Chow?

Never replied….enough said…

But seriously, I understand he is busy, and he was in hospital for a couple of days. It would have been nice to get a reply, but then again to have him judge one entry would have been embarrassing.

In Failing I Find Myself In Good Company

Check out this video of some famous failures! A friend of mine just sent it through to me today and it is really inspirational.

Your Thoughts….

A lot of you said that you didnt think that this would work out - and you were right! Now is your time to tell me, ‘I told you so’ or be a bit nicer and leave your condolences for a creative idea that just didn’t work.
