The point is if you ARE one, it does not mean others will see you as one. I have a friend who have great expertise as a whole-brain trainer for kids but never seem to breakthrough, simply because he lacks the branding and marketing skills to create the right perception. On the other hand, if you are NOT an expert yet but you are striving to become one, it does help to create the perception first, because you would be extremely motivated to meet people's expectations. @Miguel People WILL see through sooner or later if the person is not genuinely an expert.
