For those of you who didn’t know, it was Australia Day on Monday and I spent the whole day at a music festival called ‘Sonfest’. Australia Day is our equivilent of ’4th of July’, however instead of all the massive fireworks displays we tend to celebrate it with a few simple Australian tradition, but I will let our goverment explain it with their ‘Australia Day Ad’

Now I know it is a bit belated, but I just wanted to share a few of the things about Australia that I absolutely love, plus I know that we have a lot of words and sayings that a lot of people ourside of our country wouldnt understand. So I have decided to share a few of these as well!

5 Things I Love About Australia

  1. Our Freedom

I know that other countries have this as well, however some don’t. I am so thankful that I live in a country where there is freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The fact that we don’t have to worry that we will be thrown in jail for something we have said, and that we have the ability to follow our God without fear of persecution.

  2. Our Mateship

Australians look out for their friends and will do almost anything for one of their mates. If one of our mates is going through a tough time then all his friends will pitch in together and do anything they can to help. It’s funny, but even when an Australian is struggling themselves, if they notice that one of their friends is doing it tough, they will still offer to help even though it costs them.

  3. Our Talent

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Our country has about 20million people, so it isn’t huge. But when you start to think about the talent that has come out of our nation it seems that we have been exceptionally blessed – especially with sport! Here is a few famous Australians:

  4. Our ‘Support The Underdog’ Mentality

underdog Australia Day: 5 Things I Love About My Country + A Guide To Aussie Slang!
As Australians we are dreamers. We love to think that anything is possible. Which is why it doesn’t matter if a team has lost every game this season, or their best player is out and they are up against an undefeated team – there is something that stirs up inside us. Something that knows even though this team seems to have no chance – we start to cheer for them.

It is the same with ‘nothing to something’ success stories. As an aussie, we love nothing more than to hear about someone that has made something of themselves through what seems like impossible circumstances.

  5. Our ‘She’ll Be Right’ Attitude

right Australia Day: 5 Things I Love About My Country + A Guide To Aussie Slang!
I may have jumped into the aussie slang already so I’ll I’ll start by explaining. I’ll hit up Urban Dictionary for this one.

She’ll be right – australian for “it will be ok”, reflective of their supposed generally relaxed attitude to life.

  6. I love how relaxed it is to live in Australia, whenever there is a problem it doesn’t matter, cause ‘She’ll be right’. The only down turn to this is that this can easily turn into laziness!

If you are Australian and would like to add anything to this list then just leave it in the comments :D, but now we will head straight on into our crash course in Aussie slang.

Of course there are too many to list, so I have taken the liberty to list a nice selection:

  • Ankle Biter – small child
  • Aerial Ping Pong – Aussie Rules Football
  • Bogan - person who takes little pride in his appearance, spends his days slacking and drinking beer
  • Digger - a soldier
  • Spit The Dummy – Get very upset about something (usually involves a lot of yelling)
  • Larrikin - a bloke who is always enjoying himself, harmless prankster
  • Flat Out Like A Lizard Drinking,  : extremely busy
  • Rellie – family relative
  • You Little Ripper – Exclamation of delight or as a reaction to good news
  • Sanger - a sandwich
  • Chuck a Sickie – take the day off sick from work when you’re perfectly healthy!
  • Spag bol - spaghetti bolognese
  • Stoked - very pleased
  • Trackie daks/dacks - tracksuit pants
  • It’s Gone WalkAbout - it’s lost, can’t be found
  • Yobbo : an uncouth person
