Australia Day: 5 Things I Love About My Country + A Guide To Aussie Slang!
For those of you who didn’t know, it was Australia Day on Monday and I spent the whole day at a music festival called ‘Sonfest’. Australia Day is our equivilent of ’4th of July’, however instead of all the massive fireworks displays we tend to celebrate it with a few simple Australian tradition, but I will let our goverment explain it with their ‘Australia Day Ad’
Now I know it is a bit belated, but I just wanted to share a few of the things about Australia that I absolutely love, plus I know that we have a lot of words and sayings that a lot of people ourside of our country wouldnt understand. So I have decided to share a few of these as well!
5 Things I Love About Australia
-
Our Freedom

I know that other countries have this as well, however some don’t. I am so thankful that I live in a country where there is freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The fact that we don’t have to worry that we will be thrown in jail for something we have said, and that we have the ability to follow our God without fear of persecution. -
Our Mateship

Australians look out for their friends and will do almost anything for one of their mates. If one of our mates is going through a tough time then all his friends will pitch in together and do anything they can to help. It’s funny, but even when an Australian is struggling themselves, if they notice that one of their friends is doing it tough, they will still offer to help even though it costs them. -
Our Talent

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Our country has about 20million people, so it isn’t huge. But when you start to think about the talent that has come out of our nation it seems that we have been exceptionally blessed – especially with sport! Here is a few famous Australians:
- Australian Sport Stars
- Ian Thorpe (Swimming)
- Greg Norman (Golf)
- Pat Rafter (Tennis)
- Tim Cahill (Everton Football Club)
- Australian Movie Stars
- Heath Ledger
- Eric Bana
- Hugh Jackman
- Russell Crowe
- Nicole Kidman
- Australian Bands And Artists (Samples Included)
- AC/DC – Thunderstruck
- Silverchair – Straight Lines
- Kylie Minogue – Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
- Savage Garden – Truly, Madly, Deeply
- Hillsong United – Solution
- Australian Bloggers
- Darren Rowse (ProBlogger.net)
- Yaro Starak (Entrepreneurs-Journey.com)
- Alborz Fallah (CarAdvice.com.au – $1million+/year)
- Australian Sport Stars
-
Our ‘Support The Underdog’ Mentality

As Australians we are dreamers. We love to think that anything is possible. Which is why it doesn’t matter if a team has lost every game this season, or their best player is out and they are up against an undefeated team – there is something that stirs up inside us. Something that knows even though this team seems to have no chance – we start to cheer for them.It is the same with ‘nothing to something’ success stories. As an aussie, we love nothing more than to hear about someone that has made something of themselves through what seems like impossible circumstances.
-
Our ‘She’ll Be Right’ Attitude

I may have jumped into the aussie slang already so I’ll I’ll start by explaining. I’ll hit up Urban Dictionary for this one. She’ll be right – australian for “it will be ok”, reflective of their supposed generally relaxed attitude to life.
I love how relaxed it is to live in Australia, whenever there is a problem it doesn’t matter, cause ‘She’ll be right’. The only down turn to this is that this can easily turn into laziness!
If you are Australian and would like to add anything to this list then just leave it in the comments :D, but now we will head straight on into our crash course in Aussie slang.
Of course there are too many to list, so I have taken the liberty to list a nice selection:
- Ankle Biter – small child
- Aerial Ping Pong – Aussie Rules Football
- Bogan - person who takes little pride in his appearance, spends his days slacking and drinking beer
- Digger - a soldier
- Spit The Dummy – Get very upset about something (usually involves a lot of yelling)
- Larrikin - a bloke who is always enjoying himself, harmless prankster
- Flat Out Like A Lizard Drinking, : extremely busy
- Rellie – family relative
- You Little Ripper – Exclamation of delight or as a reaction to good news
- Sanger - a sandwich
- Chuck a Sickie – take the day off sick from work when you’re perfectly healthy!
- Spag bol - spaghetti bolognese
- Stoked - very pleased
- Trackie daks/dacks - tracksuit pants
- It’s Gone WalkAbout - it’s lost, can’t be found
- Yobbo : an uncouth person
So that is my belated Australia Day post. If you live in Australia, have been here, want to come here or can’t stand us – I’d still love to hear your thoughts. So make sure you comments below!

Tom,
This is a unique and entertaining post.
It sucks that Heath Ledger died. He really went out with a bang with that Joker performance though.
I remember when Silver Chair first came out. They were amazing because they were only 13 years old.
I heard a lot of great stories about Australia when I was in the Navy. My buddy went on a world cruise and stopped there for awhile. He said it is the only place where the women still line up on the pier!

I’ve always wanted to visit Australia…now I know a little more about the slang and the attitudes of the people there :)
Thanks for the insight and it was a nice change of pace from your normal posts.

Farrhad – I guess you learn a new thing everyday :D
Ben – I sometimes wonder whether Batman would have been as popular if Heath hadn’t died….
I wanted to add a few more recent bands, but I couldn’t find out how to tell if there were big overseas!
1.28.2009
Tom,
Of course the fact that he died made it more popular. That always happens. But his performance was still good and I think the movie would probably have been as good because it was an awesome movie.
I thought two-face was a little over the top but still it’s part of the story.
Dude, I am surprised you didn’t mention Steve Irwin in this post. His death was crazy tragic. He was a one of a kind talent.
1.28.2009
Ben – So true. I absolutely love him as the joker!
I totally forgot about Steve Irwin. I literally live about 20minutes from Australia Zoo (Never been there though). Americans absolutely loved him, but to be completely honest I think a lot of Australians don’t really, because now everyone expects all Australians to act as weird as he did…and say crikey every second word – when in reality we don’t at all :D
1.28.2009
Haha! Also, you forgot Paul Hogan as Crocodile Dundee. “You call that a knoife?”, “Thats a knoife!”.
1.29.2009
I would love to holiday in Aus and see the Aussie team play at MCG ( Melbourne Cricket Ground ) under flood lights
1.29.2009
you dont have any Aussie cricketer in your sports star :(
1.29.2009
ZK – I had to stop somewhere, but If I could have added one cricketer I would have added Donald Bradman :D

I have never ever visited Australia. But I have heard that its a beautiful country. Most of the great bloggers are from Australia I suppose.
2.5.2009
I have a few friends from down under and I will be sure to use some of these on them.

Even though I’ve never been to Australia I like your nature. You have such a good weather and landscapes…
2.5.2009
I try to visit the blog regularly,to get to know much more about Australia,it is the continent so exotic and unusual worthy of visiting. Now I read everything I came across about it and think of learning the slang vocabulary.
2.5.2009
Aussie slang? I read quite a bit on that! Prezzie!
2.7.2009
There is definitely no better country as least as far as we Aussies are concerned. In regards to the slang, I really wish there was more of it. As we get older I notice that we are adopting more and more of the Yankee lingo, and not meaning any disrespect to our mates overseas I just feel that we are losing part of our roots.
