A Shift In Focus For The Next 8 Months!
As a lot of you may have noticed, I have not been posting on StandOutBlogger that much lately. I have had a shift in focus and I have been trying to work out a way to bring this blog in line with my new direction. Here is what I came up with…

Over the last couple of months I have slowly noticed a shift in my thinking from a focus on active income to passive income.
The simplest way to explain those two terms is:
Active income is money to have to turn up to earn, while passive income continues to pay long after you have done the work.
The problem I have always seen with the blogging business model in this regard, is that the more work you put in, the more popular you become and the more you have to do (to keep your readers happy)!
The Regular Blog Model Is Definitely Not Passive Income!
Now that doesn’t mean that I am going to stop blogging. All it means is that the current business model needs some tweaking – and that is what I have been testing over the last month.
As you already know, I am a massive believer in the power of search engine traffic, so for the next 8 months (until July 2011) I am going to turn my focus solely towards creating profitable niche blogs – and will document my journey here.
Here’s How All This Will Affect StandOutBlogger
1. This Blogs Focus Will Be ‘Niche Blogging’
If my focus is going to be solely on creating profitable niche sites, then it is going to be hard for me to talk about social media and the like on here. So StandOutBlogger is going into lockdown and blocking out all new content that may try to sneak through related to anything that is not related to niche blogs.
2. It Will Be My Notepad For My Ideas
The last month I have been completely engrossed in the world of niche bloggers, and a lot of my research has led me to a lot of ideas for traffic generation and money making strategies. I plan on using this blog as a notebook for my ideas (both good and bad). There is going to be a lot of great ideas for people to steal and implement into their own niche sites.
3. A Lot Of Case Studies (Both Successful & Unsuccessful)
I have been working on a game plan because I know working on 10 new niche blogs at the same time is just setting yourself up for failure. So what I have decided to do create one of these niche sites at a time, built it to a minimum of $30/month (hopefully in the first month), and then look at starting a second niche site ( and continue that process). This means that I have be setting up a solid framework for each niche blog before I add another one to the portfolio.
What I Have Been Doing For The Last Month
Now I wanted to make sure that this was going to be something worthwhile, so I started my research and first niche site almost exactly a month ag0 – and man has it been a learning curve!
I plan on talking a bit more about it in future posts, but here are my results from October so far:
Niche Site 1: October
TRAFFIC
Unique Visitors: 318
And as you can see by the image to the right, the majority of it is already search traffic and referring traffic (articles, hubpages etc) – oh that the direct traffic is most likely me and a couple of people I have shared the niche blog address with.
INCOME
eBay Affiliate: $23.85
Adsense: $11.02
In fact I have made eBay over $7,000 in sales, so I am expecting my decent cost per click to continue.
(I will be going into all of this in more detail – so don’t stress)
…and yes, that does mean I have just started my second niche site!
For this second niche site, I am breathing some life back into a keyword domain that I bought about a year ago that gets about 5o visits a month (and no income).
So What Are My 8 Month Niche Blog Goals?
If you have been around here long enough, you will know that I am a massive fan of goals – especially big, scary ones!
That is why I have decided that:
‘by the end of June 2011, I will have created a passive income of AT LEAST $1,000/month – from my niche blogs.’
Now, while I am focusing on eBay and Adsense for these first two niche sites, if you are not a fan of these strategies – don’t leave (please). I have not ruled out any monetization method, and plan on research a lot of different options!
Something That I Have Planned…
Now during these 8 months, I plan on giving a lot back to my readers in the way of practical knowledge, and one of the things that I am extremely keen to do is show people how to make their first ‘dollar a day’ niche blog.
I know a lot of people struggle when they first start trying to make money online so I want to create a blueprint that you can follow.
What this means is that for one month (somewhere in the middle – I’m thinking January), we are going to do a ’30 Day Profitable Niche Blogs’ case study, and go from start to finish, building a money making, ‘dollar a day’ producing niche site in just 30 days (I will be posting each day along this month long journey).
I Hope I haven’t Lost You All…
I know this is quite different to what a lot of you have come to expect from StandOutBlogger, so I hope that you will stick with me as I make this change. This is going to be one interesting journey and I am committed to my goal! If you have been looking into niche blogs then you are going to love this as it is going to be an 8 month intensive (like school but more fun!).
Oh, and in case you didn’t know already, Keyword Winner is now available!

Thomas, now THAT’s what I’m talking about – now you’re thinking BIG!
Theory is fine and all but we get enough of it all over the web; what I want (personally) and I think others do as well is actual examples, real-world experience and something we can take away right then and there and implement it into our own goals.
Niche sites are fun as hell (got a couple myself) so I’m right there with you with the focus – it’s actually one of the things I’ll be working on over the next few months as well (doing a revamp of the blog soon).
This will be great too because if a few of us bloggers touch on the subjects it can essentially become this ongoing “niche site due” like Pat has going on. It’s been really fun to read along with the progress and if this goes on for months on end it will really benefit everyone.
So I’m right there supporting ya; now, get out there and take action!

Thanks Murray!
Real life examples are fantastic, and something that I really want to make a regular feature in the coming months – and I think I will start it with a new site (and do a full ‘start-to-profit’ case study on the blog).
Looking forward to your blog revamp (I’m working on one myself), and I would love to create a network with other bloggers looking to tackle the topic for the next couple of months!).

Hey Tom!
I really like the new shift of your site because I’m planning to do some niche sites soon!
My mother always taught me about passive income because if you do passive income, then you can have more time to enjoy life.
I’ll be keeping up with your blog for the next 8 months! :)
Cheers!

Hey Gloson!
That is my thoughts exactly! Passive income is also something that has value and is saleable (active income blogs usually don’t sell for that much money – except a few stand out blogs).
Looking forward to hearing more about your niche blogs.

Hey Rahul!
Thanks for your comment, and I think a lot of people would agree that we need more real world case studies – not just theories and ‘best practices’. So, I will try and incorporate as much of that into the next 8 months as possible.

Tom, mate – I like this new direction. I look forward to sharing it with you. I know your first niche site is doing awesome – it really is.
I’ve literally just finished one, and I hope things start to go well for it. I’ve a second one in mind, so I’ll be interested in what lessons you’ve learned.
Good luck!

Thanks Mark!
Yea, I think I hit a winner with this first niche blog, and am hoping to now be able to duplicate that success – multiple times…
Niche sites seem to be a hot topic at the moment, so it is good to see a lot of us testing out our different methods!
10.24.2010
Hey Tom
I’m debating over which ones to start next, but I’m definitely doing keyword research right now. I’m looking for exact match domains and low PR/backlinks competition.
It gets to be much but I imagine the fruits of our labour could be really good. I like the newfound focus and hope you’ll talk more about it here on SOB. Good luck!

I hear you just bought a couple of domains, so I can’t wait to chat and see what you got up your sleeves!

Hi Tom
You are right the more popular your blog becomes the busier you become. I’m learning that as a newbie blogger. Once everything is going smoothly I plan to do mini-sites too and this journey you are on is one I will be taking soon.
Will be interested to watch your progress. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Patricia!
I am starting to see your comments on every blog I am reading :)
Hopefully by the time you are ready to start your mini-sites, I will have written about the load of mistakes I am sure I will make, so that the process is much easier for you!

Hi Tom,
You have a good 8 month plan. It’s true that blogging is extremely active and requires a lot of focus and energy. It’s a good goal to work on methods to shift to passive income earnings. I think all bloggers, whether they know it or not, are striving to get that to happen. Good luck on reaching your goal!

This is awesome Tom,
I really love your shift in focus and it really proves that you’re ready to focus on what works and not just follow the crowd.
I am also working on some niche sites but my problem has been inconsistency, I hope to fix this soon.
Thanks so much,

I know what you mean about inconsistency! That is why I have decided to put everything else on hold and focus on niche blogs solely for the next 8 months. Hoping that it pays off – if not, it will be a great learning curve. :)

Hey Thomas, loving the new approach and also the fact that you plan to share everything you learn, both good and bad to your readers.
Right now I’m trying to develop my own plan on building sites for both passive and active income.
Will be happy to pick up a few tips here and there.
Good luck and looking forward to some great updates.

Thanks Will. The next 8 months I hope to be an open table, because I think that a lot of times people learn a lot more from the mistakes than the successes.
I just checked out and subscribed to your blog because I’m interested in following where your journey leads you. Talk soon.

Hey Thomas, I think this is exactly the right way to go. Too many people think that their blog is a business, when in reality it supports the business.
I think diversifying with multiple sites and relatively small income targets will be fairly undemanding and should see you on your way.
I saw someone post that their target was to have 100 sites generating $100 a month…
now that would be good…
Good luck.

Thanks Matthew. That is the goal!
100 sites at $100/month sounds good. My first goal is 10 x$100/month, and then I will expand my target from there.

Hey Thomas,
I have been following your blog for a long time. It will be very motivational for your blog readers to follow your journey and hopefully copy your system to achieve their own financial goals. I will surely follow your progress.
