Everyone knows that commenting on blogs is one of the best ways to:
- Increase awareness of your blog
- Increase your technorati ranking
- Get new visitors
- Get more commenters
Since the start of the month I have focused the majority of my spare time just commenting on blogs. I have actually gone through the whole list of contestants at Blogging Idol at least twice – commenting the majority of them.
Commenting On Blogs Works – and I have the stats to prove it.

You will notice that from just the first 7 days of July I have already smashed through last months unique traffic well on my way to 5,000 for the month. The only thing I have changed with my blog is entering Blogging Idol, and increasing my blog commenting.
Here are 10 Simple Tips I Have Found To Maximise Your Comment Results
- Start Commenting
If you haven’t already, make sure that you are actively commenting blogs and getting your blog recognized.
- Continually Increase Your Commenting
If you are currently commenting on 5 new blogs a day then look at trying to increase this to 10. Try to always be adding to your commenting schedule. - Add Value To The Post
I have found that if I just comment ‘Great Post’ on a blog then my traffic is quite minimal, however if I read through the post and then comment about my experience with the topic and add value to the post then I start to see an increase in the number of visitors. - Be The First Commenter
A first comment that adds value to a post and is on a popular blog can see traffic of 20+ new visitors. I have many times been lucky enough to be one of the first to post a comment on ProBlogger.net, JohnChow.com and a few other high profile blogs and I have seen great results from them. You can just use you rss reader to let you know when blogs make posts but a lot of bloggers are starting to use programs to help them be the first to subscribe. Programs like Comment Sniper.
- Make Use Of Threaded Comments
If you happen to miss out on being the first to comment and a fair few people have commented below you, check and see if the blog has threaded comments. If you visit blogs like JohnChow.com you will realise that you can comment on others comments 3 layers deep.
This means that even though 10 people may have commented if you leave a comment about the first comment listed, your comment is then placed second.
- Take Advantage Of Top Commenter Plugins
One of the ways I find new blogs to comment on is by seeing who the top commenter’s are on the blogs I already visit.

I doubt I am the only one who does this, so why not take advantage of it and start working on becoming a top commenter on a couple of smaller blogs to start with and not only get link juice but also some nice traffic. I am sure the top commenter’s on JohnChow.com are getting a good chunk of traffic for their effort – as they need a heap of comments to make the list. - Look For Blogs With No Follow Removed
This one will help in a couple of areas. It will increase traffic, help with search engine placement and improve your Technorati. This is an awesome tool for improving awareness and increasing traffic. Here is a couple of lists to get you started:
- Make Use Of Blogs Using The Comment Luv Plugin
Comment Luv is quickly becoming one of the most popular wordpress plugins. What it does is shows the commenter’s latest blog post title within the comment. Here is a sample of Comment Luv working on this blog (featuring a comment from Melvin)

Obviously the first point here is to keep your eye out for blogs using the plugin, but the other thing I wanted to mention was about your post titles. If you want maximum visitors from your blog comments you will need to make sure you have great blog titles that capture the readers attention and makes them want to read more. - Become A Frequent Blogger
Just like airlines have frequent flyer rewards for people who fly regularly, a lot of bloggers do something similar. I have found that if I continue to comment of a blog regularly that we start to become familiar with each other and often I have received links in ‘Link Love Posts’, found myself referenced in a post, or mentioned in some other way that increases my traffic even more.So don’t think of blogging as a one night stand where you just comment and run, but look at it as the forming of a mutually beneficial relationship.
- Consider Branding Your Comments
This is where you have your comment name as BlogName.com or Name – BlogName.com. There is a lot of discussion about this, with some bloggers saying that they would prefer to talk to a person and not a domain name.Personally, as the majority of you would probably know, I use ‘Tom – StandOutBlogger.com’ as my commenting name. I chose this because:
- It is personal – they know my name
- It lets them know where they will go when they click on my name
- It brands ‘StandOutBlogger.com’ in the blogosphere.
I hope these tips will help you increase the potential of the blog comments you leave on other blogs. I would love to hear any tips you may have – so feel free to comment away!
If you want to find out how to make your blog famous then I encourage you to subscribe to our RSS Feed or email updates to get each new post to you as soon as they are written!

Nice tips, these will surely help the people out there. ;)
For #10, IMO having your name alone is better since it tells the blogger/owner that your purpose is not just to gain links/exposure.
How much of that increased traffic can be directly attributed to your comments though? Surely not all of it?!
Well done on the massive increase though!
Richs last blog post..A Robot that can climb walls, unaided!
Well i totally agree with your 10 points. Specially the number 10. I don’t like to respond to a comment whose author identifies himself as “domain.name”. BUt the solution you give seems to me a veru clever one. I should try it :)
Good post and some good tips.

Commenting on blogs is probably the single easiest way to drive traffic to your own blog and to get recognized in the community. Leaving concise and quality comments is the first step (besides writing great content) everyone should take to build their blog.

I like the idea of using comments to increase recognition of your site and use it for that as well as networking with other bloggers.
I do like that you include your name and not just your domain when you leave comments.
For the record, I have been on the top commentators list at John Chow on several occasions and have even held the top spot more than once, but never received an excessive amount of traffic from it.

That an impressive list post you have there.

I mainly comment on dofollow blogs for the pagerank benefits (I linked to my post about that with my name) but occasionally I’ll comment on a post that interests me (such as this one) just to get my opinion out there. I really should be more active with my commenting – this post has gotten me thinking.
Nice post about effective commenting. Is there anything similar to commentluv for blogger?

This is a great list of tips! I’ve already been using most of them with good results. You have just given me a heads-up with your tip #4, thanks.
I’d like to add what could be tip #11, which consists in linking to one of your posts on the space provided to enter your website, i.e. instead of entering http://www.yourblog.com, enter http://www.yourblog.com/the-post-you-want-to-link.
This technique is useful to increase the Page Rank of your inner pages (i.e. your posts).
In case the blog where you are commenting has comment-luv plugin enabled, it should be redundant to link to your last post, as it already will be shown at the bottom of your comment.

Comments are a great way to get traffic to your blog and to get noticed. The only thing though, is that most people do not know how to use them properly.
IronBloggers last blog post..Using Web analytics To Optimize Your Blog: Part 3 Is Your Blog Performing?
One thing that can help bring in comments is allowing people to have some flexibility in the anchor text they choose. On OpTempo, I allow any anchor text that’s not bad neighborhood-ish. The only thing I ask is for commentators to leave an on topic, reasonable length, comment.
One thing that’s important to know is that the Top Commentators plugin has a bug in it that allows a spammer to replace their link with one of your top commentators links even if that spammer is Akismet’ed. I did a fix for it, Top Commentator Fix, that prevents this.

The threaded plugin does not seem to work on my blog… :-(
Melvins last blog post..I’m Making Money Online
thats a perfect steps to get better comments but is there any good plugins for comment reply?
I’ve noticed that commenting more really depends on the site. Some sites send you a tonne of traffic through comments, and others send you absolutely nothing.
If you just leave spammy comments you won’t get any traffic (most likely because your comment won’t be added by the blogger).
Make sure your comments are relevant to the article and blog. Make sure you’re commenting in your niche (while this isn’t totally necessary its more likely that traffic from the comment will stay on your site more).

I’ve always had trouble getting that threaded comments plugin to work properly for some reason. I’ve tried ‘sexy comments’ and that was ok, but I’ve stuffed up the ‘reply to’ function somehow now as well. My comments template has always been doomed.

Maybe you have some, or your readers might be interested in contributing some.

Wow guys! I dont know where to start. I leave for work and come home to 25 comments on one post!
Rich – I cannot say, but the fact is I wasn’t receiving that much from stumble before I started commenting, so I just put 2 and 2 together.
Better Interpersonal Communication – I have never really looked into blogger, but as far as I know there isnt.
Anthony at Work-at-home-Wealth.com – Great tip, I have seen this done a fair bit in my commenting travels, and think it is a great idea for seo.
Melvin & SwollenPickles – I haven’t had the chance to install it yet, but have heard a few people saying that it was hard to get working.
David – I just suggested a few to your blog, and i will email you about being a ‘featured blogger’
Tom, thanks a lot for those tips. I have just started a blog for absolutely newbies (ppl who don’t know difference between forums and blogs)on making money online – Dollarbaron.com.
These tips would sure be useful for promoting my site.( Pity Technorati Claim tools is down ;( ).
I find some methods interesting eg: # Look For Blogs With No Follow Removed. I’ll go and try that. However, for my niche, SEO would be a bad idea. Instead I should be concentrating on People optimization. There are millions ( if not bils) of MMO sites.
Very good tips on the importance of blog commenting.
I for one will look for blogs with the option to be notified of followup comments as I don’t like the idea of dropping comments and forget about it later. The unavailability of such option makes it harder to keep up with all the responses.
As for tip #10, I’ll make it a point to sign off with my name whenever I use my keyword during my comment round.
@Frank: Thanks for the fix, I’ll checking it in a while.

Hi Tom Thanx for visiting my blog buddy
and as you guys can see commenting on other blogs surely help you interact with other like minded people, comments are perhaps the most useful tool to bring home the right traffic with help you build community on your blog
but Tom forgot to warn you about the biggest mistake most blogger do while leaving feedback on other blog that is dont tempt with quick link building opportunity and just make sure that you are adding to the discussion instead of merely promoting yourself

Blogs with do-follow removed gets my top vote, hehe. I’m in great favor of no-follow in blogs and use lucia’s link love myself to reward returning commenters with it.
But commenting definitely works to get new visitors, and overtime it’ll only result in bringing in more and more.
If you do get threaded comments working, post a how to, cause I know I’d read it!! lol

This is probably the most comprehensive post about blog comments I’ve ever read. Thank you. What people don’t usually appreciate is that comments are user generated content. It saddens me to find so many blogs where you can’t leave comments. If readers can’t leave comments then it isn’t a blog in my book.
Sometimes the comments application is way down at the end of the page, or on some button that is hard to find…I find that having the comments section stand out is the key to getting people to respond…
