Entrepreneur Blogs: 10 You NEED To Be Following In 2009!

Author: Tom Category: Blog Reviews
55 Comments

As part of running StandOutBlogger, I spend a lot of time visiting a multitude of blogs in many different niches. A lot of them I never return to (for many reasons), but some just draw me in (usually with their content) and I end up subscribing.

So I have decided to (hopefully regularly) highlight a few blogs from a certain niche and just rave on them for a bit. And even if the niche has nothing to do with your blog – you are sure to learn a lot from their blog and their blogging style.

Being a massive fan of entrepreneurship and innovation, I have decided to start with that niche. And the blogs that I have included, I believe are leading the pack in content and delivery in the entrepreneurship niche.

The 10 Entrepreneur Blogs You Need To Follow In 2009!

QuickSprout.com

Neil Patel - Quick SproutQuickSprouts would have to be one of my favourite blogs to read in any niche. It is full of challenging, real life posts that always leave me thinking about my business (my blog).

Why QuickSprouts?

  • Run by Neil Patel, the co-founder of ACS, Crazy Egg, and KISSmetrics
  • Neil was named a Top 100 blogger by Technorati
  • Neil was also listed as a top DIGG influencer by the Wall Street Journal
  • Straight to the point posts that challenge your thinking

SmallBizTrends.com

Anita - SmallBizTrends.comSmallBizTrends is definately one of the biggest players in blogging FULLSTOP. With over 240k subscribers they must be doing something right!

RetireAt21.com

Michael Dunlop - RetireAt21.com

RetireAt21 has been in my feed reader for quite some time now and especially of the last few months I have been able to network with Michael Dunlop, the founder. During this time I have seen Michaels passion and drive turn this blog into a quickly growing entrepreneur hub.

Why RetireAt21.com?

InspiredStartup.com

Adny - InspiredStartup.comInspiredStartup is another new blog on my radar but definately earns it’s place on this list with Andy not only being a serial entrepreneur but also a very keen social entrepreneur.

Why InspiredStartup.com?

  • Founder has invested in 13 companies and currently runs BuddyTV.com.
  • Sits of 4 boards and 2 non-profits
  • Incredibly inspiring posts
  • Actively applying his entrepreneurial skills to help combat extreme poverty.

VentureHacks.com

Nivi - venturebeat.comVentureHacks is run by a team of highly successful entrepreneurs and investors. Definately a great resource to gain from.

Why VentureHacks.com?

  • The team has raised over $100million in financing
  • And invested another $20million into about 12 companies
  • The also provide great content and recommend some fantastic books

Visit: VentureHacks.com – (Subscribe To RSS Feed)

GuyKawasaki.com

Guy Kawasaki - Garage Technology VenturesI don’t think I could have left Guy out of this list if I have tried. Probably more of a fun and personal blog than the rest, however Guy definately backs himself up with some thought provoking posts.

Why GuyKawasaki.com?

  • Guys founded and runs a very successful venture capital company

ShaboomInc.com

ShaboomInc is probably more focused on self-emplyment then on ‘entrepreneurship as such, but I added it to the list because of the content. I am a huge sucker for a personal touch in blog posts and the author does this very well.

Why ShaboomInc.com?

  • A more personal look into small business
  • A focus on innovation and ‘dreaming’

NextBillion.net

nextbillion.netWhile NextBillion is not the typical entrepreneur blog, I guess I included or that reason. The focus is not on making money for one’s self, but on entrepreneurism for positive social and environmental change in low income communities.

Why NextBillion.net?

  • To inspire you to look into social entrepreneurialism
  • To make you aware of issues facing people outside our backyard

    Michael – No problem! :D

Joel – That is true, but least they are worth reading :P

Brenda – I really tossed up about that blog. But to be honest the content seemed very basic and I personally didn’t find that much value in it.

Neil – You’re welcome, You blog definately deserves to be on the list!

Mfinch – I would agree, and add QuickSprout as well. That blog has killer content.

Donny – Yes, so true. Let’s hope that throughout 2009 they keep pushing their blog forward!

    Their content is just unbeatable.

  9. Tom said on  January 15th, 2009 at 5:22 am

Vivek – no problem! Problogger and labnol, I wouldn’t classify as entrepreneur blog – but ProBlogger at least will be highlighted when I list the blog’s on blogging.

Appreciate the list especially Retireat21.com, amazingly am on the verge of launching a similar blog focused on the South African young entrepreneurs. Have already subscribed to your rss feed Michael Dunlop…

  18. Melvin said on  January 15th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Great list. I love Neil Patel’s blog and his story is inspiring considering how he struggled before and how he has become successful now.

  19. Tom said on  January 15th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Suzanne – fantastic blogs aren’t they?

Muzi – Michael runs a great website, best of luck with your new venture!

Melvin – Exactly! He always has such insiprational posts.

  20. jj-momscashblog said on  January 16th, 2009 at 12:59 am

Hi Tom, Another great post with a great list of new blogs for some of your readers. I have however been and read a few of them. Of course I have always enjoyed Michael Dunlop’s and he has always been very helpful when I first started out in the biz. However when you stated that you didn’t include Young EntrepreneursBlog/forum because you didn’t find any value in their work or the content seemed basic I have to disagree. These guys are growing rapidly and “gaining over 1,000 newbies” a month!! Now that’s quite impressive I think. I don’t see how you can leave them out. Maybe when you said basic you meant it was a slow day and maybe the topic was something you already knew about, but don’t count them out yet. Keep up the good work.

  21. David Hobson said on  January 16th, 2009 at 7:27 am

Nice list! There are certainly some great blogs on there that I can learn a lot from…I just hope my site draws you in enough to get you to subscribe rather than being one of the ones you never return to :)

  25. Dalirin said on  January 17th, 2009 at 4:15 am

I have noticed, successful blogs are blogs that has motivational posts. Blogs with blogging tutorials don’t really survive.

  26. Nathaniel said on  January 17th, 2009 at 8:17 am

This is a good list…too bad I only recognize one! But I am sure I will get to know them well. They sound really good.

  27. Nathaniel said on  January 17th, 2009 at 8:20 am

@Dalirin – I have noticed that too, a funny thing huh? I guess people like motivation more than learning how (though some tutorial blogs have done quite well). I think it is good to include a little of both.

  28. Static said on  January 17th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

A great list there Tom. InspiredStartup is one of my recently favorite ones as it definitely is words coming out of an experienced individual. RetireAt21 is another one that I’ve been into for the last year or so. Definitely an awesome list. Of course though, you shouldn’t stop at these 10 only. ;)

  29. Tom said on  January 17th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Dalirin – I think that is because people like to be encourage and feel good about themselves than read technical information.

Static – I am only stopping at 10 for entrepreneur blogs. I have a list of other niches that I will be highlighting the top 10 blogs from in the near future :D

  30. The Moneyac said on  January 18th, 2009 at 7:21 am

Thank you, Tom. It’s quite an honor to be named here. These days it’s more important than ever for self-employed folks to realize that they are entrepreneurs. No offense to those bloggers but you might as well be reading John Chow or something and that’s not saying too, too much.

Yes, I like to read accomplishments and stuff too but I think people actually want to know HOW they do it and most of them don’t tell you any secrets without a catch.

From all the above, RetireAt21.com is my favorite one, mostly because of all the inspirational interviews!

Although, I do partially agree with Jay. It would be better if the above bloggers explained HOW they achieved their success.

Great post. I am definitely going to check out a few of your suggested blogs. Blogs are extremely useful… in fact the other day I was blog hopping around and found an awesome blog, in which someone had posted information about a valuable book titled, “The Handbook of Financing Growth” by Kenneth H. Marks. I have purchased it and have started reading it… it is just what I needed. There isn’t a day that I don’t learn something from someone’s comments. Thanks again for the suggested blogs.
