BLOG QUESTIONS: Money or Fame?
Continuing this series of blog questions (check out the Passion or Profit debate), I wanted to continue to shoot down a similar line with this next question – because I see this happening a lot at the moment!
Do You Blog For Money or For Fame?
This question definitely hits home as I look around the blogosphere and see a plethora of bloggers that most would consider successful (based on traffic, subscribers, social presence, etc), and in fact in most circles they would be considered experts (or even blogging celebrities!) – but they are not making any money!
I know a lot of bloggers of both sides of this equation, but let me give you two examples (minus the names):
-
Mr Celebrity Blogger
Came onto the scene and quickly built an amazing presence within his niche. He had a massive following – with website rankings that most people who had been blogging for years would be jealous off, and such a social presence that I would be surprised if less then 10% of the bloggers in his niche DIDN’T know who he was.
BUT, he wasn’t promoting any products and wasn’t making any money.
-
Mr Income Blogger
This blogger has been around for a while, but I doubt that the majority of you would have heard of him (he actually has commented here a couple of times!). He does have a blog in the MMO niche, but it is full of quality content (not just inspiration/motivational hype). However, the majority of his full-time online income comes from niche blogs in a range of unrelated topics – that has a consistent flow of traffic (from search engines).
In other words, his focus is on creating income producing assets.
Now, once again I am not saying that either is the right or wrong choice, because there are successful people on each side of the equation. But the way that I look at it is, that one side seems like active income – while the other has the opportunity to become passive income!
Feel free to shoot me down as you leave your thoughts below!

I think many times the two come hand-in-hand. Once you are generating a revenue, especially a very high one, once you get people to believe that is true… I think it’s easy to get into “fame” status as a blogger.
However, I know there are those who probably blog just for the fame. Even so, I’d be hard pressed to find those who don’t make a pretty penny from their blogging efforts (especially those who are surprised if 10% of their niche doesn’t know them!).
Or, perhaps someone is doing it because they enjoy it, but mostly because they want to generate income from it… and then get the “famous” status later on.
Personally, I treat my blog like a business since it is a vital element (though not the ONLY element) of it, so I guess you could say I fit into the “Mr. Income Blogger” category…
Though I wouldn’t mind elevating to “fame” status eventually as that would definitely give me a break from the effort I put into traffic generation :-)

Neither exclusively. I stand behind my comment on the Passion or Profit debate

I think for most new bloggers, the idea of making money is more motivating than being famous. The goal of attaining fame comes a bit later, I think.

I think maybe some people blog for the fun of it, I know at first I thought it was fun and I really didn’t see how it could not be fun down the road. Boy I was so wrong, it’s work and the work you put into your blog, one hopes to make the money so you will get that natural high feeling of success and fame.If you are making money from your blog and you have the passion then the rest will follow. jj
